Not necessarily. They can and often do stay that marbled colour. I've also seen them pure dark base and pure gold base.

Xanto's are very popular and expensive in Asia, though not so desired on this side of the world. It's too bad, because I think they're awesome looking plecos. Great odontode growth on that male!
