This young pair of P. breidohri are trying to protect their newly free swimming batch of fry, but a Geophagus brasiliensis 'Bahia Red' has other ideas.

Beautiful .. I think that is stressful for the pair if they are that intrusive.

Great video jim ! At what size did you start to notice what sex they were ? Do you have pictures of male and females ? I am trying to figure out what sex the one I have is . They are great little creatures . And from what I have noticed they don't know how to stop eating ! hehe

Thanks. They sex out pretty early, at around 3" or so. The females are typically smaller than males of the same age. Females also show a darkish area on the front of the dorsal as many other CA cichlid species do. Here are a few pics of some younger fish.

Nice pair how long have you had them? And what size did they start spawning?

I have several pairs on the go right now. They are all offspring of my original pair that I obtained about 5 years ago from the ACA convention. I have since lost the male and the female is presently out in the pond along with several 4-5"ers. I have three of four pairs inside that breed continuously plus a number of others. I guess you can tell that I really like this species:thumbsup:. They are one of my favorite CA cichlids ... all personality. They can spawn when very small(~3-4"). Good thing because they are extremely slow growing!!

How do you condition them before spawning?
