I have a number of young P. breidohri growing out in a 165G tank containing several other CA species (regani, argentea, bulleri, to name a few). During a water change today, I noticed a young pair tending to a spawn. Here's a video of a 'next generation' pair of what has become one of my favorite CA cichlids.

Beautiful pair. I have a group of nine myself that i am growing out. They are around 3" now. I've kept a few pairs over the years, one of my favorite species.

they are called Viejas.. And no dummy can change that.

And whoever changing cichlid names every few years are are the dummies.

it's like changing rules for sports (basketball and football )evey few years

I understand where you're coming from. It is somewhat frustrating, but with new information, change takes place. Check out this link (or not).

Actually prior to Paraneetroplus, they were called Paratheraps/Vieja/Herichthys/ and initially Cichlasoma breidohri. Maybe we should go back to that. Seriously!

Lol good point. Maybe they should go back to that. Interesting, i didnt know they were herichthys at one point. Anyhow, congrats on the spawn. I have some growing out and one of them is finally coloring up. I hope they end up as nice as your pair.

It's coming along nicely and it's color should increase with time. As to the sex, it's difficult to tell. I have always found that in a batch of the same age, males outgrow the females, so if this is the largest, it would seem male. On the other hand, males tend to have more color and your fish isn't showing much yet, so based on that ... female. Also, I notice what looks to be a black patch, although very faint, in the front of the dorsal fin. This is present in some of my females and never in males. But not totally reliable. So based on that .. ?? I'll show you a pic of my older, mature pair, and then the younger pair for sexual comparison and then a young male. It's mainly the size difference and color.
Final decision - male.
