I have a synspilum that is very short bodied. I have googled for others with a similar shape, but I have not seen a round one like mine. It was purchased at an LFS and labeled Synspilum. It is about 4 inches long. I am wondering if it is a hybrid or just an oddball. Any thought are appreciated.

Just wonder if you picked him out of a batch of normal body syns. If so, he is no hybrid but just a random mutant. Judging from the shape of his head and mouth, there is no indication it is a hybrid with parrot. Round body is highly valued in Asian fish line breeding. There are now tall (normal) and short (deformed) body Green Terror, Parrots, Green Texas and Flowerhorn available, and this is the first time I saw a short body syns. Breed him/her with other syns if you can to fix the body shape.

In Asian practice, the tail of this fish will be chop off to form a butterfly form. Mutilated and deformed fish aren't my cup, but I am keeping and breeding High Body Green Terror and love their round shape.

Aye, I disagree with mutilating or causing damage to the fish in ways such as cutting off bits of their body parts, ink injections and the likes. Just way too cruel imo, even if these are fish.

I also tend to not go for deformed fish, most of the time not because of it being a deformity in and of itself, but just that I do actually find most deformed fish unattractive in some way. I don't like short bodies, neither do I like the BP beaks. I also don't like EBJDs, or have never really thought about keeping one because of its deformed physiology. Then again, I don't like nuchal humps on Flowerhorns either (which is why I don't really care much for them). But I also like albinism on some fish. :P So it's all a matter of preference really, and for deformities, unless it's truly debilitating, generally I think it's fine and is just down to what people like/dislike.

Mutilations tho, I definitely do not agree with, at all.
