Hi guys, I just wanted to know if anyone has or had kept this unbelievably beautiful cichlid? I found some information on them and it seems like the male can be very aggressive. Is that only towards this species or to any fish in the tank?

Can anyone tell me if I can keep a male by himself (if i can find one) in a 55 gallon tank?

Any additional information can you guys can add would be appreciated.

Thanks,

I think they would be too big for a 55. I have 2 of them growing out, 1 is a total ass and 1 is pretty laid back. The calm one is growing out with a bunch of G. Brasilensis and the jerk is in a 75 with an umbee growout. The umbee is the only fish I have been able to keep him with, even trashed a festae growout.

I have not kept one, but considering the pics I've seen of large males, a single specimen will outgrow a 55. Personally, I would say a 125 for a large male of any of the large paratheraps species as a minimum for the long haul. I already wish I had a larger tank for my 12" male synspilum, who is currently in a 6' 125 by himself.

It is true the fish can grow to 12" which would be a lil tite in a 55, but you can get a 75gal which should be 4'x18"x21". That could house the fish for life. Yeah a 125 would be better but left in a lake would be best and were not all about to do that are we ;)

A great response. Hopefully now some will rethink when they start to crucify people over tank size.

Yeah I agree, seeing an adult syn in a 55 is still better than seeing it in a 10gal at the LFS

Agreed.

Yeah I know my tank is small but this is what i have to work with atm :( I have seen on Jeff Rapps Site as little as .75 to 1 inch in size. How long before I need to get maybe a 75 gallon tank? Atm, the 75 gallon is out of the question (Damn Wife, lol).

I completely agree with Tojo09's comment. I spoke with Jeff and he said one fish is ok in a 55 gallon. I am not sure if he is telling me this because he is trying to make a sale or if this is really the case. I feel really bad putting cichlids in this size tank since i tend to want fish that get at least 12 inches in size.

He/she if I go with Jeff would be the only fish in the tank!!! Damn this sucks............:irked:

^^ if he really did say that then yes he is more than likely just trying to sell it, there's no way any 12" + fish can be adaquately housed in a 55 gallon tank for an extended period of time let alone for life :/
