Has anyone ever mistaken a small piece of plant root, or something similar for a parasitic worm?

This morning I was watching my smallest Green Severum, and noticed something hanging from the bottom of it. It was a little longer than it's bottom fins, and was skinny, and translucent white. Right away I thought it was a parasite, so I chased it around the tank, and finally got it in the net. I was examining it close up, and nothing was there. I put it back in the tank and watched it swim, and never saw that 'parasite' again. Could it have been some kind of debris, or do worms retreat or something when disturbed? It worried me, because if I have a fish with a parasite, I am going to have to 'get rid of it'. I have only another tank that's already stocked. The tank it's in now is shared with another Green Severum of similar size, and a 5'' BGK that is extremely sensitive to medication. Rather than risk anything with the other fish, I would have to get rid of it, as sad as that makes me.

What do you think it could have been? Has anyone seen this before? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

White and translucent? It just sounds like the mucous membrane of their intestines. This makes such sign very misleading when diagnosing for internal parasites. Unless you notice your fish is getting really skinny and refusing to eat anything, I wouldn't worry about it.

Ok, thanks Lupin. I'll see if I notice it again. I just get a little paranoid when something unexpected happens. ;)
