Parasite Prevention

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
there are plenty of meds use to treat parasites or ich infections but thats only if your tank is infested with parasites. other then that i think the only thing to do to prevent parasites are frequent water changes and filter media cleaning...=P

Another method would be to add a UV Sterilizer which could some what help as well as a preventative measure...

Also, more complex and hazardous way is use ozonizer but try be careful about strength, duration and frequency because if free radical ozone gets into tank, can incite rebellion and / or bad manners.

Ok, here's another question. What are some really effective medications that I can use for parasites on fish that may not have them just to make sure if there are I can get rid of them. Thanks for all your help so far, I've learned some new tricks :)

Can use this method in quarantine tank for short time once only, but recommend not use this method in main tank regularly. Reason is, parasites can build up resistance to that medication. Now, you have created a supervillain strain of parasite. If your fish get sick, what medication can you use? If you sell / trade / give away some of your fish, this supervillain strain of parasite can spread all around and maybe there is no way to stop it!

But, if using just once for short time in quarantine tank, before introducing fish to main tank, some methods can include:
i) Potassium permanganate bath
ii) Formalin / Malachite Green bath
iii) Praziquantel treatment in quarantine tank
iv) Metronidazole treatment in quarantine tank

NB: These chemicals are harmful. That's how they kill parasite life-forms. Please know exactly what you are doing step by step, otherwise, very easy to kill fish, or even worse, give yourself cancer.

Kuji out.
