i was replanting in my tank today and disturbed alot of gravel and substrate and noticed that there was worms or some sort of small worm like things swiming in my tank
any ideas what they might be?

worm come from uneaten food. meaning that there is left over food in your tank for a long time, or you never take the uneaten food out.

Every time you feed piranha all uneaten food have to take it out after 30min. if you leave it to long in the tank, it will mess up the water parameter.

Also it sound like you didn't do enough water and vacuum the gravel well.

Here what you can do, for a couple of week. Do 30-50% of water change and vacuum the gravel ever 3 days. Raise up the temp. Check the filter as well, worm maybe in there. clean the filter out.

When you clean the filter out, DON'T clean it with tape water. clean with water in the tank. so that way it won't kill the bacteria in the filter.

i already do 2 15% water changes a week the filter is cleaned once a week and all food is taken out immed.
these worms arnt in the surface gravel but way down in the soil substrate

alittle more info about the worms they are white to redbrown color less then half an inch long segemented almost like an earthworm

YUP!..the worm come from uneaten food...what els you think the worm come from?

the filter is cleaned once a week

Bad ideas...don't clean it out once a week..you killing all the bateria. Should clean with tank water every 6month or 12month..but that just me.

well they seem to not be a problem unless uy soil is disturbed so would it be alright to leave them be or should i take out all the soil and sterilize it in the oven and start again with new plants and such?

i have a planted set up so i get alot of organic matter in my filter none of the media is replaced except carbon every 6 weeks or so

the usual way to get rid of these worms is heavy water changes frequently. not just 15% but try 30-40% every 2 days.

but if you get rid of them and go back to your usual water changes theres a good chance that they will come back.

i'd say just leave them, they are harmless to your fish. but if i were you i'd up your water changes by maybe 25-30% twice a week instead of 15.

What exactly ARE planeria? (besides wormy things lol)

Do they just eat the stuff leftover in the bottom of the tank?
