Yes, but you have to make sure you kill off all life stages of a given parasite. For instance, ich has certain stages of its life cycle that are not affected by medications. So, you have to continue treating your tank long enough for that life cycle to flesh out and be eradiated by medication. Some parasite will simply die off in the absence of an appropriate host.

You need to research the specific parasite you are concerned with for the details of its life cycle.

^^Good stuff

i dont know what parasite, it was like blisters on his body (and a couple yellow marks under scales...?? i treated with melafix and salt, if i do a water change without putting in dechloriniser will the chlorine kil it off or do i have to do something else??

Melafix and salt won't kill many parasites. You would need to eliminate hosts (fish) for a couple of weeks or treat with a formalin based product to be safe.

If there are no fish in the tank, and you can protect your beneficial bacteria somehow (like hooking the filter up to another tank) you can add a little bleach to your system. That'll do it for sure. Just aerate heavy the next day, change most of the water, and use 5x dose of dechlor when you start over.

Wouldn't moving the filter to another tank risk infecting that tank with parasites... as well as allowing them to reintroduce to the original tank when you move it back?
