I went to my not-so lfs to get a medium sized jack Dempsey but they were out of stock for that. In the tank I saw a black colored cichlid with beautiful blue/green dots. I couldn't resist and bought it. Now in my 90 gallon which is sparsely populated. I need to ask should it be in pairs or one will do fine on its own ?

I just purchased a 5 inch female. Polleni has been on my wish list since I started keeping cichlids years ago. I have read they do not have a strong pair bond, so a single fish would be fine. Males can kill females when not breeding. I have mine with a male firemouth and a few Rio Choluteca convicts in a 55 gallon. They get along fine so far...
