Whos' keeping them and what are you keeping them with? I'm looking to add a large Paratheraps hartwegi Rio Naranja to an fairly aggressive community.

Whats been your experience with this species? Especially in community settings. Thanks!

it will do fine i keep a solo fish with trmacs syn, gluttatus, and a agentea and they a all fine intrduce fish with divider

Nice. I've never used a divider. I typically do a large water change, total rescape and add at least 2 fish together. Seems to divert focus

I have a 5" hartwegi in a 210 gal community Vieja/Paratheraps/Paraneetroplus tank. It fits right in in terms of aggression, although my 7" zonatus has recently started to take exception to him. Nothing more than brief chases and a few lost scales now and again, but I'm keeping my eye on it. A while back my hartwegi dominated a similarly sized regani, but the tables have turned. Still, no major aggression.

In the end, I think your likelihood of success will have more to do with the personalities involved. In theory it can work, but you never know. Changing the tank around, or starting with a divider, is probably a good idea.

Good luck

Adding adult CAs to an established tank is always a crap shoot. In my experience all of Paraneetroplus species Iv'e dealt with have been less aggressive than Parachromis and probably Amphs too (my Midas is only tiny so I can't comment yet). Then again every fish is different and it really all comes down to trial and error.

I hear ya. Always like to grow fish up together but I have and opportunity to add a 12" Male Festae to my 300 gallon community.

Female is about 6-7" and there's also a 12" Female Jag and a 12" Male Argentea and an 8" Female Freddy. Several medium loricariids and half a dozen 4" sd's. Obviously I have no idea if the Festae will pair up or spawn at all but anything in there would need to be able to handle potentially quite a bit of aggression.

Thinking I may not add anything else or possibly a male Freddy. The Hartwegi is a beautiful fish, but I fear it might not be able to handle things if picked on. Probably stay with a more aggressive species.

Thanks!

I think that the Hartwegi is a beast. I had a Hartwegi pair M 11"/F 6" in my 400 breeder tank with Argentea M 12"/F 9", Festae M10"/F 7", Trimac M7"/F 4". And the Hartwegi were the bosses, they bullied everyone and killed my female Festae. Once that happened, I moved the pair into my 300 with my 12+" Hoga, 12" Heterospila, 7" Atro, and 12" Bifa. The Hartwegi quickly became submissive and no longer was a bully. The tank is very peaceful. I know that my Hoga has a lot to do with calming the aggressive new comer down and knocking them down a few pegs.

The Hartwegi are beautiful fish, I would stay with it, it can handle it self. My Hartwegi is my avatar.

Wow. Very cool info and stunning fish you have there.

I like to try to introduce larger fish in pairs, so as to take some focus off there being "one" new fish. The male Festae is every bit 12" as are the Jag and Argentea. Largest Hartwegi I can get is about 8" but I will be able to hand pick the fish. I can definitely find the Alpha. Ideally, I'll introduce the male Festae and Hartwegi together to remove focus on one fish. Total rescape and put them both in together.

Thoughts?
