Not sure if this is the right forum but can Paratilapia bleekeri go in with new world cichlids? They seem to have similar water and diet needs. Is their temperament capable of handling them selfs with say Oscar, green terror, jd? I don't plan on any really aggressive fish like a Midas or dovii. This is a future plan fish for my 240 gallon tank. Any info would be great

I have kept Paratilapia with many new worlds over the years. I find there can sometimes be a problem when kept with similarly blue spangled cichlids such as jack dempseys and those from the carpintus complex.
At the moment I have Paratilapia with Herichthys bocourti without a problem.

Are they truly very slow growers? I ask because I may need to get one sooner to grow it out before it goes in with the larger fish. Are they ok with African cichlids? Are they still pretty rare? I seem to find a lot of articles on them saying the same thing over and over but not a lot of people selling them. Ha ha a small list but hey I'm here to learn :).

I had a pair of Polleni and a pair of jags in the same tank. I also had some Malawi Venustus for dithers. I wouldn't consider the Polleni slow growers.

I don't find them to be either slow or fast, but believe lots of space, and plenty of water changes will make a difference, the more water changes, the faster they grow. I have also kept them with Africans without a problem.
They (like most Madagascans) are hard on each other and seem to ignore other species, alpha males being the most deadly. I would not keep them with anything that fits in their mouth.
They don't seem to be rare in my area, they are available in any number of LFSs.

They are fine right up until they lip lock with a CA/SA of equal size. They have the attitude for fighting but physically don't match up well.

Sounds like a fish I'm gonna consider. I got to reading and the page I was reading about them on was from 1999 lol!! Guess things have changed... Thanks for the info guys.
