Been bugging my parents to let me get another tank that is bigger then my 55g in my bedroom. Well i was on craigslist yesterday and found this 125g tank with stand for 250$. Finally after talking with them they let me call the guy and this friday im going to pick it up with my dad :nilly::headbang2:headbang2:headbang2:headbang2:headbang2

It comes with 4 fish though, oscar 2 JD's and a parrot cichlid. If i didnt take them i would have to wait to get it since he would need to get rid of the fish first. So i have a baby oscar and 2 baby firemouth cichlids in my 55g atm and wondering is that ok stock for it?

Also his main filter broke and he has 2 small HoBs on it, so i was thinking of getting something like fluval 405 or the fluval FX5 canister

FX5 would be more than enough. I've found my HoB filters aren't that great unless I have more than one even in my 30g, but I've only tried 2 diff brands (one marineland I believe, I don't recall the other). I suppose if you don't mind doing frequent water changes, it isn't much of an issue though if the filter is a bit underpowered.

I can't comment on stocking, I'm still new to that myself.

lucky i wish i could do they with my parents. :(

Did he say how big the fish that were already in the tank are cause if you put baby fish in they might just get eaten

my oscar is only like 2 inches and the FM cichlids are like 1in if that and i was thinking of putting them in my 10g and put his fish in my 55g, just till i get the tank running, and a good filter on it, i never used a canister before so i dont know what else i need?

All i know is that i need a power head right?

No need for a powerhead. All u need to get with a cannister filter is some decent media. Check what media comes with whatever filter u end up getting- if u need more get the good bio-ceramic tubes (Fluval makes a good version- biomax maybe?) or something similar (not bioballs in my opinion). I think the setup & filtration forum has a useful sticky for media. U need powerheads for undergravel lift tubes. That may be what u were confusing. Good luck

In addition to what has been posted, I'm surprised no one has mentioned that your Oscars will grow fast. Around 1 to 1.5 inches a month. When I purchased my my first Oscars, they were 1.5 inches long. 14 months later they were 16 inches long and continued to grow. I had to sell them, do to a job relocation. I sold them to a friend who had a 500 gal. chiclid community tank. They needed a bigger tank too.
The largest Oscar I've ever seen is 19 inches in captivity. So with this in mind, your current tank should hold them for a few months, but I would plan on getting at least a 100 gal for each oscar you have. A 75 or 90 gal. will do but the more room the better for them. Good luck with you new tank and fish. May they bring you much happiness and enjoyment.
