Ok so I know that this should be posted in the West African section of cichlids but not enough people frequent that section and This is a story that needs to be heard by everyone. Paretroplus is a specie of Madagascan cichlid that is on the verge of extinction. These fish are facing threats from Habitat destruction to introduced species and simply cannot compete. I was fortunate enough to pick up a few paretroplus Kieneri last year and loved them so much that I decided to dig into the specie and see if I could not get some more. I have since purchased a total of five kieneri and 3 Lamena. They have been amazing fish to keep. They are as responsive and puppy dog like as an Oscar. They are mostly snail eaters by nature from what I gather. Though mine have done fine on a mixture of prepared foods and occasional brine shrimp and black worms. The two species I am currently keeping, Kieneri and Lamena, are the smallest growing paretroplus reaching only about 5 inches. Being that they do not eat plants and love snails they make an excellent planted aquarium specie. Other Specie of paretroplus grow rather large... in some cases well near or over a foot (Menerambo, maculatus, dambabe)

Most of this specie resemble a salt water tang in body shape. They are amazing fish and I simply want to expose more people to them without boring people with a long long post.... as if this is not long enough lol. I am going to leave of with a few links from people who are keeping this fish currently. I hope they do not mind as they are better photographers than I and these fish will not sit still long enough to get a decent picture for me.

enjoy

When I get some good pics of mine I will post up.. I am working on it. If you guys know people keeping this fish let us know.

ive always thought those looked like cool fish to have but i never see them anywhere, also, what about breeding, easy, hard, never been done? if their going extinct in the wild that would be very good to know.

guess i shoud have read those links, looks like breeding isnt the easiest, but not crazy hard

I 've had lamena, kieneri, maculatus, dambabe, and menerambo over the last 10 years or so, all spawned except the dambabe but I've never been able to raise fry. One of the most frustrating genus of cichlids I've kept.
