Hey guys, I dunno if I am asking a silly question that may have been answered already but here goes. I want to know if P. menarambo eats aquarium plants? I know that they are sand sifters, and they eat snails like nobody's business... but if there are live aquarium plants in the tank, would they be eaten? Thanks.

Although I never saw mine eating plants per se , they certainly liked tearing them up, and rearrange things, so anything that was rooted, was uprooted. Especially when they grew 15" and more
I have used java fern and floating plants with success, and found heavily rooted papyrus in pots have worked with maculatus, near windows where sun allowed it to emerge. (the plants were very well established before ending up in the tank)

Well, they did seem happy in tearing up my vallisneria... uprooted them and they are still juvies. LOL. :D How big do menarambo grow anyway? And how long would it take to grow into adult size?

Good looking biotope style tank in those photos.

Many factors after growth rates but in ideal conditions it takes about 2 years to reach 8-10 inches. Maximum size is probably 12-14 inches.

Love the setup that you have there man

As Jose' said it does take them some time to get large.
Beside their length, they are very substantial fish all around, and very active, so a large tank should be pretty much a no brainer.
They are snail eaters in nature, I would move mine from tank to tank that was infested with snails, so much so, you could barely see thru the glass in the morning, and it'd be snail free by the next day. They can easily crush snails with hard shells like Malay live bearers, and for larger snails to large to crush, they have those 2 can opener like incisors to simply extract the flesh.

I have found them to be oblivious to non-Paretroplus as long as their tank is large enough
