Some of these popped up at my LFS - first time I've ever seen them in the hobby, really awesome looking fish. But I can't find squat on their behavior, care requirements, biotypes, spawning ect.

The LFS said they're almost extinct and/or believed to be extinct in the wild - does anyone have any information on these fish?

Greetings:
If your supplier has the correct ID, this fish has not been in the hobby! The species is maromandia- truly a rare paretroplus (see pic http://cichlidae.com/gallery/species.php?s=1443).
Please tell me more about your LFS (have them send you a pic if possible because they maybe thinking of P. dambabe).
Saludos
Jose

I misidentified the fish and it is in fact Paretroplus Maculatas - still must be a fairly rare fish as I've never seen them in many years.

He has 12 for sale, not entirely sure on the price.

The LFS itself is run by the owner's family members - the owner is a retired Marine who does this as a living now. He breeds high quality stock in his warehouse and sales some lower quality domestic strains through the LFS with a few rarities such as this on display for hobbyists who might come in with an interest.

The stock he keeps in his warehouse is of much higher quality and all are cared for with the quality anyone would expect out of a hobbyist rather then an importer.

I am positive he ships inside the U.S. but I'm not sure if he has the capability and licenses to ship intercontinental.

It's a shame I don't have a larger tank or I'd probably pick these guys up, the ones I saw in the LFS were roughly 3"-4" in length in a very large tank that had a separate filtration system from the other tanks. They spent most of their time swimming back and forth the entire length of the tank.

If you want any other information or a way to get in touch with him let me know and I'll find out some contact info for you - I can't care for these fish as they grow too large for anything I plan on setting up right now.

That's the same guy i got my "petitis" which are actually Dambabes, from. He's pretty awesome guy. I was actually surprised to see that he had a couple of menarambos and Maculatus in his LFS in MoVal. I thought he usually kept them out in LA. I think he said, he won't be getting in new shipmet of these guys until give it another 8 months or so? Although i did recently see that he put up some of his maculatus on aquabid.

If he is the one with Macs on aquabid right now, he is a great seller. That is were I purchased my macs. Excellent quality fish and great shipping rate/practices. Would have purchased more but, all of the others were very large.

since this posting, i've found out that one of my dambabes turned out to be a maculatus!!! i'm not surprised since he kept 3 species in the same tank, but it's ok. I like my maculatus. The only downside now is that, i have one of him/her and the rest are dambabes.. I hope they don't interbreed!!! Oh noo..
