i think both of my fish are too young to spawn, but i figure i'd ask anyway.
i have a blood parrot about 4" and a male kenyii who's about 3.5" and lately they have been rubbing against one another. not agressively in any way, but i do seem to notice that the kenyii will go underneath the parrot and kind of "nip" i guess. but not really that because i know what an attacking fish looks like.
i guess my question is, do you think it's possible for them to breed?

I dont know MAYBE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would say it's very highly unlikely that they could breed. the biggest problem would be the different spawning techniques of the 2 fish. :)

besides that, they are from two whole different species, different genus, everything. it would be like you trying to breed with a dog, it wont work. hybrids work because the two fish are closely related enough to make viable babies.

They are closely related, a texas cichlid is part of the Cichlasoma genus, the blood parrot is a hybrid fish from that same genus, Cichlasoma.... see how that works? NOW a kenyii cichlid is part of the pseudotropheus genus, not part of the Cichlasoma. That is how my texas and parrot are breeding....and im not a her, thus the name goodMIKE :)

my bad. wasn't paying attention.

what goodMIke said is mostly true in that the hybrids you commonly see such as flowerhorns and many african hybrids are from very closely related species. there is still no 100% iron clad information as to the origin of the blood parrot but it is believed to be the cross of a severum and red devil/midas. most believe that this hybrid was created in a lab because a severum and red devil are not closely related enough to spawn together in most aquarium settings.

basically, if 2 cichlids are fairly closely related they can produce hybrid fry. Most Central american ciclhids are closely related enough to hybridize but of course as with any rule there are exceptions. some people claim to have seen Green terrors hybridize with jack dempseys or texas cichlids but I find this very hard to believe. Aequidens species are not nearly as closely related to Herichthys or Archocentrus and imo would not be very likely at all to hybridize with those cichlids. :)

however, what GoodMike said about the texas and blood parrot belonging to the Cichlasoma genus was not correct. In 1983 the genus Cichlasoma was restricted to the small Chanchito species from South America such as C. facetum, C. oblongus, C. amazonarum etc. ;)
