I just bought a small blue parrot cichlid yesterday. I also bought a blue crayfish. I have them in a 10gal tank. Tested the water today for the first time... Nitrates were fine but the ammonia was a little high. Should this be a concern or is this normal for a new tank. Any suggestions?

no level of ammonia is safe for fish, you need to go out and get a product called CYCLE and add it to the tank so that your fish arent harmed by the ammonia, i would be surprised if you had any nitrates at this point, there is supposed to be a little nitrates in the water this shows that the filter is cycled but any amount of ammonia or nitrites is bad, using the product i advised with the dosage it says will keep your fish safe and cycle the filter, also you are going to need a bigger tank and hopefully the crayfish doesnt eat your parrot cichlid, also could you post a pic of the parrot cichlid? is it blue as in DYED because if this is the case then it probably wont live that long as this is a very harsh method that they use and literally dye the fish's skin, its a horrible practice and you really shouldnt support it but not a lot of people know about it so just learn from this and dont support the practice with any future fish you buy

oh and WELCOME to MFK there is a lot you can learn from the people on here

wow thats good stuff to know. I have a product called API stress coat. Will thats do the same.

No. Google "nitrogen cycle". You'll figure out what Sarah is talking about. And you need a bigger tank asap.

parrot cichlids belong in the hybrid forum but its probably good you posted it here with the questions your asking because you will get more responses. your parrot is small now but will grow and a 10 gallon is virtually useless but you do need to do as stated above and get some cycle in that tank. feed very lightly like once a day or once every other day until the tank can catch up. then start saving your money for a biigger tank or take the fish back. welcom to mfk and good luck with your fishkeeping

It could be a real Parrot?

Does it look like this:

or a blue version of this?

Either way you will need a bigger tank.

yeah its dyed then, how badly has the crayfish pinched it? crayfish eat fish so at this point if you still can i would make a choice and return one of them or at least divide the tank, or best thing would be to get a march larger tank if possible, i think a 55g would be good for a parrot cichlid, though since it is dyed it probably wont live its full life and so you know the dye will fade away in a month or so. but with a bigger tank the parrot should be able to get away from the cray fish, might also help to make sure the crayfish stays full so he doesnt go out hunting, if he has only nipped the fins and not gone into the skin then it should all grow back

Wow I wish I new this all before. Its my friends first tank. I have a little bit of a better tank. Should I Feed it to my Red Tail Catifish.!! HEHE:grinno::D

yeah thats why its always a good practice to try and research before you buy, there are not many cichlids that can be put in a 10g, n i hope you have a pond for that cat, they get as big as a kid!!
