All the parrot cichlids i seem to get locally have been agressive bullies. Is this true of most parrot fish? I wanted a peaceful parrot cichlid for my planted tank. How often is it for parrot cichlid hybrids to be peaceful?
He picks on just about everybody. He got a chunk of his fins taken out after he and the alpha goby started fighting. They circled each other for several minutes flaring and then the parrot fish started shoving him. The goby ran to his cave and when the parrot fish followed he turned around lightning fast and bit him on the belly. Now he fled the scene but started harassing the firemouths until the alpha discus came in (who is much much bigger than him) and pecked at him. So he fled and now the parrot is attacking my plants and flailing in frustration.

Is this a Parrot cichlid: hoplarchus psittacus

Or a Blood Parrot:?

Blood Parrots can be little buttheads when they are younger, especially in smaller tanks. They tend to mellow out when they get older but sometime you find ones that are just plain mean. How big is the tank you are keeping them in and what is the stock of the tank?

Tank is the 100g. Lots of live plants. Discus firemouths (<babies) gobies hatchetfish dwarf frog cuckoo catfishes petricola cat BIG syno hybrid 2 juvenile bn plec, a third baby bn missing for several weeks. Might be missing something.... the parrot is very very small. Maybe 3 inches. 1 solid orange color, has the atypical deformed mouth and the extended head found in many young specimens.

Blood parrots are usually little butt heads. Mine used to pic on smaller cichlids such as a juvenile jag and young firemouth but once these fish stood up for themselves that's stopped. I personally wouldn't house blood parrots with discus. Although deformed they are usually still a little to rowdy for them. Nor have mine ever been plant friendly

Mine was a bully until I put him in with my Oscar,Severums, and Gar. Now he minds his own, never tries to bully anyone. Probably cause he is outrageously outsized though. I feel like blood parrots are only bullies when they are the boss of the tank.
