THIS is my dominant male Hoplarchus psittacus.....I absolutely LOVE these fish! If you have a chance to get some, venezuelan OR brazilian...jump on it. Mine is the brazilian variant by the way..;) :woot: The shot woulda been AWESOME..but there was a STUPID trumpet snail on the glass near his caudual fin..haha...RRG!!

I plan to get some of these soon- since they aren't the cheapest fish to buy, can you tell me- what size tank do you keep them in, what water quality, what tank mates, etc. ANYthing that might be helpful- I'm gonna order them from Rapps in the near future-

My tentative plans include keeping them with Uaru's and a pair of plecos, in a planted tank. However, since I live in FL, even with peat, driftwood, flourite, etc, I got my pH DOWN to 7.0, and the hardness is still off the scale. (so far the baby uaru's are doing great....)

They are awesome fish. I have the Brazilian strain, which is a bit harder to get. They have more blue and reds on the face and body than the venz...although the Venz. are still lookers! All the ones Rapps has now are vens. keep in mind these cichlids get LARGE...16" +....just a heads up. Mine are in hard water right now cuz my RO unit isn't workin. They aren't overly aggressive but they will stand up for themselves! Mine eat anything it seems like..haha..LOVE earthworms!
