I know you can get a Red Texas by crossing a blood parrot with a Texas Cichlid. But what would the outcome look like with a platinum parrot instead of a blood parrot?
Wow, thanks for that information! I thought the platinum parrots were actually parrots, but that makes a lot of sense. I also though the polar blues were a platinum parrot/convict. I actually have platinum parrot/convict fry now that are over 4 weeks old, waiting to see what they’ll look like. Really appreciate the info. I will be on the lookout for a blood parrot then and hope I get lucky that it’s a female.“Platinum parrot” is just a trade name and is actually just a leucistic convict/hrp and just like “polar blue parrots” are a normal convict/hrp that are line bred from a shortbody mutation that makes them look similar to blood parrots though they are actually not a hybrid of blood parrots. They don’t have the same capability of fading as blood parrots do from their amphilophus midas/rd genes so they you wouldn’t get the same outcome of a bp x cyanoguttatus/carpintis. I would assume the fry from a “platinum parrot” x Texas would vary with some fry carrying the shortbody mutation and some not while the convict taking more of the looks In most the fry (like they do when they hybridize with most other cichlids) with some pearls from texas but like I said they will not fade.
Yeah convict parrots are not hybrids just a genetic mutation that has been linebred. Earlier generations don’t seem too have much a parrot mouth but down the line it shows.HybridFinatic is it just the fact that they’re hybrids that they get the parrot mouth?
Oh, ok. I took “convict/hrp” as a cross between the two of them. Thanks for the info!Yeah convict parrots are not hybrids just a genetic mutation that has been linebred. Earlier generations don’t seem too have much a parrot mouth but down the line it shows.
I see yeah I meant that platinum or polar blue parrots can be of convict or hrp bloodline. Your WelcomeOh, ok. I took “convict/hrp” as a cross between the two of them. Thanks for the info!
Allot of times you'll find hybrids of convict x hrp for sale as "convicts" in the big chain stores but that's more or less just them trying to profit off of them rather then trying to be as accurate as possible like some mom n pop shops are. Granted even the best of us can still get an ID wrong some times, so always take what the store says it is with a grain of salt. I know I've had it plenty of times where I was lead to believe I was getting this specie when in reality I got a different specie entirely. One I remember the most was when I got what I thought was a "female dwarf gourami" when in reality it was a baby giant gourami, granted still loved that fish even with how mean it got in the end. Also had another time where I bought a "zebra loach" just to find out it was a banded tiger botia loach. Tried to feed him to my predator fish, after he killed my mated pair of farowella cats, but he was too fast and smart so he just became a unintended member of the tank.Oh, ok. I took “convict/hrp” as a cross between the two of them. Thanks for the info!
Oh man, the loach incident had to have been a major bummer. Thanks for sharing the insight. I picked up a Texas Cichlid today. Tomorrow I go back out looking for a blood parrot. Will need to get lucky on the genders, but we’ll see how it goes!Allot of times you'll find hybrids of convict x hrp for sale as "convicts" in the big chain stores but that's more or less just them trying to profit off of them rather then trying to be as accurate as possible like some mom n pop shops are. As long as they are 4in+ you should be able to vent the to check the genders. I'd vent the parrot first to make certain ya get a female, males tend to be infertile. Once ya get a female parrot the next step would be making certain ya have a male GT.Oh man, the loach incident had to have been a major bummer. Thanks for sharing the insight.
