I don't understand how something so susceptible to water is used to support aquariums that can weigh in well over 100lbs. Let's face it, spills are going to happen as water always finds the path of least resistance. Transferring fish, a busted O-ring, and the overfill can lead to a puddle or two on the floor. Yet manufacturers will put untreated, unfinished particle board on the bottom of their stands.

Case in point: I had a valve develop a small leak on an XP3 and the entire base of the stand swelled and bloated up. A mishap that could not have been predicted but happened....

I guess the lesson to learn here is to either paint and seal particle board stands or go with wood or steel. :nilly:

I agree but most of the stands for tanks of fifty five gallons or less are made of the stuff.Luckily most of those stands that I have were purchased either second hand cheaply or were flat out free as most of them have some degree of warping from water exposure.

My 220G stand had that crappy stuff on the bottom. The rest of the stand was real wood. When I got the tank and stand used the wood on the bottom was U shapped...lol ... I removed it and put a 3/4" piece of ply wood under there. Now my sump sits level and it's a lot stronger.... :)

I use my dads old college trunk and filled it very full with odds and ends from around the house. It is sturdy as all get all. My other tank is on a really old table that is unbelievably sturdy. I gues they just don't make things the way they used to.
