Okay so for some reason my tank has had floating particles for the last 3 weeks. It is a 180g tank. I️ do a 60% water change once a week. I have 2 canister filters on it, a sunsun 304b and an FX5. I️ also have 2 xl sponge filters with air pumps on each side of the tank. My stocking is a pair of Vieja Breidohri, one chocolate cichlid, 4 Geophagus pellegrini And 2 Rotkeil severums, also a few plecos. My tank has been perfect for almost 3 years now. These floating particles came out of nowhere. I️ hate my 2 canisters plumbed Into drilled overflows. Since I️ though this may have been the problem, yesterday I️ spent 10 hours gravel vaccing and then Undid all my filters (that actually took 12 hours to plumb back in may). And then capped the overflow off and used the canisters conventionally over the back. I’ve tried both with powerheads for a week, and then with powerheads turned off for a week. I’ve tried doing multiple 60-70% water changes in a week. I’ve tried not feeding for 2 and a half days. I️ don’t know what to do anymore. Close to breaking down the tank and selling everything as it is becoming unenjoyable for me. I️ Work too hard on the tank for no satisfaction. Fish all seem perfectly fine.

Have you started feeding a different food? Or some of the cichlids started digging?

That seems a bit overly dramatic just because of a little bit of debris floating around.

Nope food has been the same. I am thinking maybe adding a HOB filter with some filter floss. I have filter floss in both canisters but not sure what else to do. Have tried accu clear to get rid of it. Tried moving powerheads around in different places. Just not sure what else to try

Have you tried the fine polishing pads for your fx5? I believe they are supposed to filter out particles as small as 50 microns. A human hair is 70 microns thick.

I had the same problem, I also added super micron filter pads to my Rena xp3. It cleared up, but the pads also clog quickly.
