I have a 29g i got with a setup i bought, it was used a sump for a reef tank. The tank is empty except for a float valve installed through a 5/8ths hole in the side. Im planning on using this tank as a planted or a growout tank in the near future. It is possible to patch the hole with a peice of 3/16ths lexan? I dont have any small peices of glass and the nearest glass shop requires a $50 minimum order. I was planning on patching on the inside of the tank and then using a patch of the same side on the outside. Is this possible?

Silicone isn't going to stick to the acrylic.

No Home Depot? The glass store really doesn't have a 1" square offcut they can give you instead of throwing away? If you've only called 'em, probably well worth walking in and telling them you just need this teeny tiny piece of glass. Sell 'em some sob story about fixing something before your wife sees you broke it (or if you're the wife, modify the story appropriately).

If you just use for growout and it's not a show tank, a workable - but ugly - alternative would be just slap a piece of capped pvc on the outside of the hole using a DIY bulkhead: http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/diy_bulkheads.php
