just as the title proclaims. i turned my lights on in my 125 gallon tank and noticed my payara shaking his head. after i looked closer i noticed that he has what liooks like poop hanging out of his gills. im afraid to do anything and hurt him, but i can tell that he is highly uncomfortable! what can i do?

pics?

there not the best, but the pink stuff is coming out both sides. this was the only side he would show me!

cant rely tell by the pics... u think its a parasite hangin out or did he get in a fight w someone?

well i know its not his gills cause more and more keep coming out. my mother made a good observation that it might have been a fishes intestine. its starting to come out, but its still in there. for example that little peice right there has expanded from 1/4 of an inch out of gills to about 2 1/2" out of the gills. i don't want to pull it out and damge him, but he is highly uncomfortable!

You're confusing me. I can't see your photos properly. How are the gills still looking? Pale red or rosy red? Are the filaments looking shredded? That would indicate your fish may be anemic and exposed to gill flukes. Flukes are extremely dangerous parasites that attack the gills.

I think I'd need more information here.

1. What is the size of your tank?

2. What are your water parameters? State the brand of test kit used.

3. Is your aquarium set up freshwater or brackish water?

4. How long the aquarium has been set up?

5. What fish do you have? How many are in your tank? How big are they? How long have you had them?

6. Were the fish placed under quarantine period (minus the first batch from the point wherein the tank is ready to accommodate the inhabitants)?

7. What temperature is the tank water currently?

8. Are there live plants in the aquarium?

9. What filter are you using? State brand, maintenance routine and power capacity.

10. Any other equipment used (aside from heater and filter which are two very important components of the tank)?

11. Does your aquarium receive natural sunlight at any given part of the day? What is your lighting schedule (assuming you do not rely on sunlight for our viewing pleasure)?

12. When did you perform your last water change and how much water was changed? How often do you change your water? Do you vacuum the substrate?

13. What foods do you provide your fish? What is the feeding schedule?

14. What unusual signs have you observed in your fish?

15. Have you treated your fish ahead of diagnosis? If so, what treatments did you use? State your reasons for planning ahead of proper diagnosis.

I think a praziquantel dosage is needed here.

Remove carbon.
Add 2.5 milligrams per liter of water.
If you are using the powdered version, it is difficult to dissolve. Predissolve in tank water by shaking it up in a small container.
Dosing
Day 1 -- remove carbon, perform water change with vacuuming, and add Prazi to tank
Day 2 -- add Prazi
Day 3 -- do nothing
Day 4 -- do nothing
Day 5 -- do nothing
Day 6 -- add Prazi
Day 7 -- add Prazi
Day 8 -- normal partial water change with vacuuming
Day 14 - normal partial water change, then add prazi
Day 21 - normal partial water change, then add prazi
Day 28 - normal partial water change, then add prazi
Day 35 - normal partial water change, add carbon, treatment is complete

I may have put the contraindications in one of the sticky threads here.

praziquantel does what? if its not to much to ask.
