they may only eat live for a while but have been trained to take other foods like shrimp/krill. They are very sensative to water conditions.

I have tried to get mine off live several times, (live brings parasites a lot) and they just stare at it. My arowana eats what ever I place in the water, and all the fish watch him eat. I have had no luck yet, I also dont feel comfortable starving them for a few days to make them want non live because they are so skinny in the first place.

BadA$$ fish though I have had mine since Oct. last year with no mayjor problems! they are awesome, try and get a few as they all like to school with their own kind, BUT armatus doesnt school but I doubt they it is an armatus.

Good luck, what size tank is it going in and with what other fish? They pack a temper! How long has the tank been up and running?

with enough starvation and other forms of torture it should eat market shrimp. I just can't understand why you want a fish that has the largest dentures of any characin and you want it to eat dead foods? If this fish evolved into something that ate dead things it would look totally different.

Thanks you for your reply,
I know what you mean Hybridtheroryd16, I just wonder only. Maybe some day I have to setup another tank for just payara species. The tank I have now maybe too small for them. My tank is 6x2x2 with 15" blk aro, 7" wb datnoid, 5" ngt , 12" tig cat, 7" long fub senegal bichir.

Thanks

which species?
the scombs or redtails have no problems in that tank for a long time.
but they both grow very slowly.
