Im thinking about getting a payara/saber tooth tetra. But i dont know what size tank is best. Do they do well in full fresh water or are they a brackish species. DO they like community or being alone/ paired. Thanks for your replies.

I have 2 six inchers in a 220 with other predators they are generaly solitary occasionaly they will hover together in a v formation. They are aggressive bastards as soon as food hits the tank they are destroying goldfish minnows ect

I have two together with some other fish but the problem I am having is the one payara is beating up the other payara so I think you sould do one or three to four the payara thats getting beat up will die here in the next day or two. I would move him if I had a place to put him.

So if i got one would he do alright in a 180 gal for a year or two with a small aro and Largemouth bass

well my payara is grown about 3" in the last 3 months I have him on silver sides

You guys have to remember what type of payara's you guys are talking about too though. Scombs are ok, they are kind of skittish and very sensative to ich. They only grow to about 12 inches in an aquarium then mysteriously die off. Redtails, like Jeff Jollie has grow larger, are a lot hardier and a lot more outgoing. It's almost a night and day comparison. And the largest payara species is Armatus, which get to about 3 feet, are the most aggressive, and a lot harder to find (expensive when you do). So it really all depends on what you're looking for. I'd personally suggest a redtail if you plan on having tankmates. If you are planning on having a species tank, you could get away with 1 armatus. Good luck on your quest. Keep us posted.
