Hydrolycus armatus
Hydrolycus scomberoides
Hydrolycus tatauaia
Hydrolycus wallacei

A report i read said that the Hydrolycus scomberoides Payara that everybody sells only get to a maximum of 10 inches. And the true monsters are the Armatus and Tatauaia! Anybody know this to be true, i was under the impression all my Payara were going to grow big! If this is true i will have to seperate my 4 redtails it seems to me the are outgrowing my 8 Scomberoides and are also more aggressive towards them.

no scomberoides are small, that's where the 10 inch mystery death comes from. From what I understand armatus are the big ones, and tats the second biggest.

Actually most people are under the impression they SHOULD get huge, but mysteriously die at about 10 inches, that's why people are always asking how can I get my payara to survive past 10 inches etc.

Put it this way, when was the last time you saw a payara above 1 foot?

The ones that are commonly sold are scomberoides.

The only photos you'll see online of huge 2 foot payaras are in Japan/Singapore/Taiwan etc, because they are armatus.

I have never seen an armatus or tatu in the west, there must be a really select few.

I've only ever had scomberoides and cynodon gibbus.

Wow so out of my dozen only my 4 red tails will get big and the regulars will stay small. I have gotten mixed answers and will wait until an importer answers to be sure! thanks in advance this is important since i dont want these red tails to outgrow and keep bullying my regulars especially if the regulars will not grow bigger!

Maybe you'll just have to sell off the scomberoides and buy more red tails/yellow tails!:D I can't wait until I get some payara. I better make it down to my lfs before the sells out of the red/yellow tails!:nilly:

Any body else have any opinions on this! Again i have been getting mixed reports from respective people! Some say that the Scomberoids are the biggest and the red tail tatus and armatus max out at 2 feet while the scomberoids get to 46 inches. Others say the Scomberoids stay only 12 inches! Never seen a fisherman with a 3 foot red tail and the huge ones they seem to look like scomberoids are they really all armatus on the fishing trips.

I think it would be awesome to have a 10 inch payara, I was under the impression as are most other people I bet that all Payara get large.
Actually i was thinking this also if its true having a school of Payara all 12 inches and thick would be cool and be really functional in a 240, probably would not need the insane cuurrent and would not outgrow the home tank!
