hey, have recently become v.intrested in scombs and have found a good source. Just wondered what success people have had with tankmates for scomb's? and any good tips for a perspective payara keeper?
as ever thanks for your time!
They are pretty good with tankmates as long as they dont fit in their mouth, Make sure the tankmates arent aggressive or aggressive eaters. If not they might eat all the food before your scomb has a chance.
the only thing u have to watch is scombs are prone to getting ick. ive never personally had a problem but make sure u acclamate them slowly, be careful on the trip home, and make sure ur water conditions are top notch. after they get used to theyre new home youll love em. and careful with the factors aroman said.
If you want them to just hang in there they work with many different fish.
I had mine in isolation till they started accepting non-live food. After this other fish were introduced. In MY experience the more different kinds of fish where added the less they ate. They were intimidated a lot by dats. Didn't like the Nandus or Chelcius either. They co-existed and did not fight but they didn't eat near as much as they did isolated. I could actually tell they were growing. In the payara tank they have been in for 6 months or so it doesn't look to me like they have grown at all.
I'de recommend keeping them with fish that will not even eat the same kind of food. Nothing that will give them competition at feeding times. That's if you want to GROW them. Otherwise they will exist with many kinds of fish, just don't expect noticable growth.
This is just MY experience. And yes VERY prone to ick. If you are going to feed live make sure it's qt'd. And add salt.
