I have a question for all you that keep Payara......

How full are you filling the tank?

Anyone run into problems with the fish bashing the tank tops/lids?

I've got probobly 1.5-2 inches between the surface of the water and the lids. Anyone else experience these crazy lil bastids coming out of the water this far? I should mention this only happens during the feeding frenzy...or fury I should say, stuff gets crazy.

The only remedy I can think of is to build a canopy that covers the top 3-4 inches of the tank. But what if the problem persists as they grow?

I mean in the wild these things fly out of the water like sharks after seals right? Am I looking at padding the top of the canopy that I am going to have to build?

Hello me, it's me again..........:nilly:

This is sweet. I'm getting the impression I am the only one having this problem

Maybe I should just go back to feeder fish :screwy:

I'm gonna go ahead and drop the water level to see exactly how far they come out of the water.

Should be interesting........

hmm hopw big is your tank and how many do you have in it?
and what are you feeding them? they could be compeeting for the food and swimming full speed to try and get the food before the others?
try letting out a lil more water to giv more room

my raphs go nuts when i clean the tank. ive had them jump right out numerous times. but that is only the raph species, all of my hydro species are alot smarter and my armatus doesnt get excited at all. he will often snag feeders while im cleaning the tank. the raphs always find a way to splash me. every once in a while they'll hit the top when snatching a fish but i always have the water all the way to the top. dude someone took a huge chunk out of my atf. who was it armatus or redtail?

Have a feeling it was the armatus. DB junkie, i would probably just lower the water level. You said "go back to feeding feeders", What are you feeding them now?

Their main staple is freeze dried krill. That's why they are coming out of the water. The krill never drops off the surface. They swim mid-tank then fly straight up at the krill. Looks just like the great whites going after seals.

The redtails are growing fast and it's causing heighteded aggression during feeding.

Only a problem with the redtails and the Rhaphs. The Scombs just head to the bottom at feeding time to avoid getting shanked. That and they know the nightcrawlers are soon to follow. The Scombs actually pick up the crawlers off the bottom.

The tanks a 180. 2 Rhaphs, 2 Scombs, 4 Redtails, a chelcius, and a Nandus.

I don't believe that hydros are any smarter than Rhaphs. The Rhaphs are the ones that taught the Hydros to eat krill. If I just had a tank of Hydros I'de probobly still be contaminating them with feeders.

I can drop the level. Not a problem. I just don't want them jumping higher and higher as they grow. Don't really want them to get used to this then have to come up with a tank that's 4 foot tall when they get big.

Don't want to change diet cause they changed a lot, for the better, when I changed thier diet. More active, grow faster, less crap, and the red tails have gotten a lot more colorfull and of course no worry about disease.

Trev, I'de get that ATF out of there. Armatus hate ATF and will eventually kill it. There's been numerous reports of Armatus constantly punkin atf, even GATF, and from my understanding the ATF always loose.

yeah he had to come out. DB, u might have some luck with getting those scombs to grow pretty big since u got them off live food. as soon as my fish get better im going to try non live alot more i cant have this parasite thing happen again. i have to take out my redtail too hes starting to pick fights, and my armatus almost put him in his place, which was cool but i dont want to loose another redtail
