i currently have a 4-5" dorado in a 55 gal grow out tank. i was wondering if i could put a payara of the same size in the tank?

I wouldn't do it if I were you. The payara just doesn't have enough mass to go up against a dorado. BTW, I see that you live in the SF bay area. Where did you get your dorado from? I have been looking for some. Thanks.:D

i ordered mine from shark aquarium. it was only $60 for the 4" plus shipping. what if i got a larger say 6-8" payara (looking at the redtail or the armatus if i can find one).

My dorado grew from 3" to just over a foot in it's 1st year. And, it wouldn't tolerate any tankmates in its' 125gal. I definitely wouldn't recommend these "river tigers" (native common name) in with slower payaras. Payaras feed on fish that fit their mouths. Dorado don't mind tearing up large fish when they feed.

the dorado i have is actually pretty skiddish, whenever anybody walks in the room he starts swimming around franticly. he even hides in a cave shaped rock occasionally. could u suggest a tank mate??

Fry and fingerlings have a greater fight or flight survival reaction than older specimens since they're prone to falling prey to many more predators than adults are. Since this "skiddishness" is something they WILL eventually outgrow, I still have to recommend no tankmates for dorados. Especially in small enclosures.

thanks appreciate the advise. i've seen a few tanks with 5 or 6 dorados schooling, but ive also heard that they tend to get aggressive in groups. can u clear this up??

They're known to hunt in pack shoals (as seen on "Blue Planet"). Individuals rarely can be kept with other fish but, it's been done. I've never had luck mixing individuals with anything else. Even in large (450gal+) tanks.

A reason? No idea. Ask the fish. As to what you've heard, my dorado killed 2 dorado (same size) upon introduction. I didn't even have a chance to net them back out before they were too far gone.
