Are payara compatible with other fish?
I want to put one in with:
1- reticulated ray
1- fire eel
1- SA lung
1- BGK
5-6- geophagus iporangensis
3- florida gar
and possibly 5 pictus catfish

So, will these fish get along with a species of payara that only get 8-16"? Another question, what is a species that only gets to that size?

Thanks in advance

I forgot, an Indo Dat will be in the tank too. What should I take out if this is uncompatable?

Retic, gar, catfish and dat are fine. Atleast I had or heard yes on these. The other , don't know. Fire eel sounds Bad!!
This is with a Tat. Red Tail Payara max out around 18" (so far recorded on MFK)

I'll ditch the fire eel then, I've always wanted a payara.:D

I don't really know what species I want, just something that stays small, 8-18". Any suggestions, I'd like to go with the red tail?

Does anyone know how the other fish I listed would do with the payara?

You should be able to judge by the charector of the fish. You don;t want to add anything over aggressive so you dont stress the red tail out. Most cichlids (or fish that act like) are to aggressive and would not be recmd to add as a tank mate. People are always trying to be the first to have one fish with another that no one has really done. Try and see what hapends, I rec you get a divider just incase you need some time to get rid of the not so nice fish.

I'll try and see what happens like you said. I was under the impression that the payara would hurt the other fish, is it the other way around? Sorry I'm such a noob, just new to payara.:D

Is the red tail payara my best bet, or is there a different species that you think may work better?

Armatus is by far the top three (lol) max out around 2.5-3' in home aquaria (thus far)

Red Tail is next max out around 18" (also in home aquaria)

Scomb and Rhino something In my opinion is the wrost to have. They rarely swim with light, constantly get Ich, and suppos they die for no reason around 12"

For your specks, Go for a Red Tail Payara plus the Tat (red tail payara) and the armatus have nice color where the scomb and rhino... are just silver and yellow. I picked one up for Ocean Blue in Orange County Cali. for $90.00 (was asking 120.00) at 8.25"

Okay, I'm defiantly getting the red tail payara.:headbang2
Do they eat frozen foods or will they only accept live? I plan on feeding it things like tilapia, squid, and pellet stuffed market shrimp.

I'll post pics when I get one and set up the tank.

the sock list:
1- Red tail payara
1- Reticulated stingray
1- SA lung (maybe albino :D)
1- Indo datnoid
1- Black ghost knife
3- Florida gar
5- Pictus catfish
6- Geophagus iporangensis

possibly- 1 pike cichlid (xingu)

Nice red tail payara by the way, makes me want mine even more.:D

Lets go this way...
I hear they eat non-live food, but I have not got him off live foods yet. I am doing the starvation diet () and just feeding my Gar/ VATF'S market shrimp stuffed with small portions of frozen beef-heart. I hope by him seing the other eat it that he will too. So I say it is possible as some guys have.

I don't know if the Black Ghost will survive being that they are pretty thin (don't take my word on it though). Also a major factor on aggression is tank space. Lil space means war!!
