pb with aligator gar?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
could work for a bit until the gar gets to a couple of foot, depends on the size of the bass

is a peacock bass and alligator gar compatible? if they are can i keep a gar at high temps like the cichla? around 87.

Maybe... Hard to say as each Gar has a particular "personality".. I however only know Gar and not Peacock bass so can not say much from that side of things.

In general us insane Gar folk do not recommend such a mix as a precaution but it has both worked and not worked with Cichla enough to just say be cautious about it.

Obviously and I'm not sure that you need to be told this:
The gar will eventually get much bigger and will need different quarters. Temporary is the key word here.

i definitely agree with polypterus' statements, and would further suggest against the combo as it will probably be more trouble than it's worth. gator gars are particularly aggressive compared to other species, and since they two would need to be separated eventually (likely sooner than later) there seems to be little point in risking damage to the fishes. if it were a different species of gar i'd say go for it and see how things work out, but with gators it's generally a different story...my two cents :) --

i'm sure i heard florida gars cope better in high temps than others, not sure how high though

what gar would you recommend then. again it has to be able to live well in high temps

i would go with a Florida/spotted gar as they are easy to come by and quite durable. any gar will do just fine at 78F...i currently keep all my gars (varying sizes/numbers of Cuban, tropical, crocodile, spotted, Florida, and longnose) at about 80-82F with no problems--
