i had 4 pbass in a 125g - also had a wolfish and clown knife --- all fish are in teh 5 -8" range. in the last week the wolf, knife and 2 pbass have died (all on separate nights) i found them when i woke up in the morning - water params /temp are fine.. all fish were eating no problem. the largest pbass has bee the most aggressive in the tank toward all fish, with the exception of the only other fish left in the tank - another pbass- could this be due to pairing off? do they do that at this size ~8"? any help would be appreciated -- i think they are monos or a hybrid mono

Water params fine...did you check for ammonia? Most test strips and such dont include an ammonia test. Your Ph, nitrite, nitrates, Kh, and Gh can be perfectly fine but ammonia could be through the roof. With cichla your biological filtration has to truly be overkill. You need ALOT of it to control the ammonia, and you have quite a few fish in that tank contributing to the bio load. What kind of filtration are you using? If you havent noticed any extremely aggressive attacks going on for a few days, or if the dead fish dont look like theyve been run through a grinder, you may have a water problem more than an agro problem.

ammonia is fine - run an eheim canister (dont know the model off the top of my head - tank is drilled and am running a wet dry (which i think is suitable for 200g+).

dead fish have looked like they took a little of a beating - which is why i think there is a lot of fighting going on when the lights go off

so, you're saying you haven't tested the ammonia...

no - i have tested the ammonia - have tested all water params - temp at 86 or so in the tank - its not a water issue as far as i can see - mainly want to know if anyone has had an aggressive pbass kill other tankmates, and/or if this is happening due to him pairing off with what i think is a female.

i've had my group gang up on a salmon tail catfish once, biting him all over and killing him over night. I think it could be over crowding in the 125gal that did it and the dominant bass just cleared out the weaker fish.. IMO..

Pbass usually don't have a one night of terror, aggression should be somewhat consistant any fish can kill but hey not say it isn't possible just not usual. In my experience Pbass will keep putting other fish in their place and may eventually kill them. Everytime I have added a fish that doesn't make it I see the signs of agression from day 1. So if your sayin that they all got along fine during the day or wen ur lookin then head to bed then wake up and find a dead fish it's unlikely to be you cichla but not impossible just ime. Gl
