Check the water chemistry. How long has the tank been set up, well water or city, ammonia?, nitrites?. temperature drop or overheated... it could be too hot and that makes them puff. I dont think its cause its eating, my bass eat big meals and they dont puff. Something chasing his arse? is he wild caught and how long have you had him- parasites.

Kill the lights....that makes all stress worse.
High ammon or nitrite....water change, if well, treat water first if city
too hot above 80...15% water change with 70 degree water....i had my bass at 90 before and I lost 2 moving them

An interesting note....making changes to my house and my 300 gallon was exposed to 40 degree temps. with extra heaters and insullation the tank went down to 61 degrees for about two weeks....when the room was finished and temps rose to 75 again they spawned within 4 days.

Do you have an air stone in there? Warm water during WC carry less oxygen. Also could be not enough Prime or water conditioner.

Okay so water chemistry is ph: 7.6 Ammonia: 0ppm Nitrite: 0ppm Nitrate: 40ppm Temp: 82

No i do not have an air stone but i have pothos plant growing out of the top. Do they help with oxygen at all?

how new is the tank?
how long have you had the fish?
nitrates are a little high but thats only a ticket for HITH.
plants help with oxygen but if you pump from a well the Oxygen is low, my fish do puff from that but it is short lived.
Are you running a wetdry?
O yeah what do you feed him?

Ken might be spot on with low oxy.....

I had had him for 6 months
The tank is 2 months old 65 gallon acrylic with duel 406 fluvals
No i am not running wet/dry filter.
I feed him pellets, freeze dried krill, earth worms and occasional feeder fish
I am using tap water treated with prime.

Ut oooo. Feeders. My dad told me, " if you wet your noodle in some unsavory sauce, its gonna ruin your noodle forever"

Could be diseased Bro and the water change was coincidental. If I was using city water i would do smaller changes (@15-20%)
