What's your opinion on mixing cichla species? How about people's choices of dithers or tank mates?

My community....C. Green, C. Brown, C. Yellow

It depends on what your into, I like seeing a mixture of different species of cichla, but if your trying to breed a certain species and thats all you have in there thats cool too. As far as dithers I like large silver dollars, I love their schooling behavior and how they constantly swim, now throw in a catfish or two to clean up the bottom, and an aro up top for top water action and thats the perfect combo Imo.

I was actually serious.

I'm not into breeding but also afraid of different sp. with different tempers and tearing each other apart. My dithers are by accident because they are carry overs from a previous setup. Not into aros or cats. Besides I don't have big tanks.

you just have to experiment and have some where to move them to if it doesnt work out.......its a risk but so is keeping 200+ gallons of water in a glass box held by silicone....all part of the game.

What type of PB is that alone in the second picture? Me likely!

C. Melaniane aka Xingu

All three in the first pic are Xingus as well. They are actually siblings from the same spawn.

Ive done a few different species together. I like a mixed look. But I also really like a tank full of azuls(ado had a rad setup). I enjoy the bichirs on the bottom as well as a tig or some rays. Lately Pete turned me onto Geo's. I like how interactive they are and they are also good at cleaning up. An aro or 3 also look good with the bass. What I dont like is the central american cichlids mixed in w/ the cichla.

I don't like centrals mixed with bass either...I like my bass to be the focal point of the tank....and I have'nt had good success keeping geos with cichla....they're so mellow that my cichla always end up picking on them and stressing them out or out eating them....Its a interesting mix of colors but ime geos do better off with discus or angelfish or something.

I am a fan of a variety of species in the same tank...but I have a bit of fish A.D.D. Seems like I can't decide on what I want to keep long term. I currently have 2 pbass (1 Pleo, 1 Rio Yucao O), 3 oscars, a male Festae, 2 Poly's ( 1 Ornate, 1 Endli), and a P. Metaense TSN. I'm ALL over the place in that tank. Lol.
Btw Ken, love the Bass/Blood parrot combo. They look awesome together.
