I have two Ocellaris Cichlids both of them a little over 4in. I don't know if this is normal since this is my first time keeping peacock bass. But I feed them rosy reds and more then half the time only the alpha fish eats and when the other one eat it sometimes play with the rosy. It will keep it in its mouth, flip it in its mouth and then spit it out. Is that something that I should be worry about. My other question is how do I get them off live food? I try krill, mysis shrimp and even some sinking carnivore pellet that a pet store owner said they would like. Is there a method to wean them off live food. Any help would be great.

There is a method up in the stickies at the top of the page for converting bass from live.I have'nt tried it yet since mine are only in the six inch range.I would let them fatten up on what they will readily eat and once they get some sizelength try to introduce them to other food items. Then again you could try to ween them off of live now.

before you get them off live get that smaller guy eating good first.. most likely what will happen if you convert them off live is the larger guy will eat a lot more of the prep food or the other won't eat the prepped food at all. you will have one dominant cichla and the other will be a super runt or get eaten by the other.. get them on guppies so that the smaller guy can get them down. feed them one at a time until you have them both eating at the top.. this will allow you to target feed the smaller guy and will also allow you to get them off live in the future.

As mentioned, check out the sticky on getting them off live. I used this method with goldfish, frozen goldfish, and silversides. It worked very well, and now my Cichla are all on silversides. Now it is just a matter of getting them on shrimp.
