Hi everyone! Happy fish keeping! So I bought an itsy bitsy baby PBass about a week ago. At the LFS, they all were pretty small and rather skinny. I bought the fish along with 25 feeder guppies, it ate for a couple days, and then I went on a five day vacation. When I arrived home, I discovered that the fish has TREMENDOUSLY grown! The LFS's PBass are still the same size as they were. Is it typical for them to grow this quickly? Here's some before and after pics..

I assume that your aquarium is larger than the one that your lfs uses? With more space and a lot of food, your peacock bass would grow faster and bigger than the ones at the lfs. How big is your current aquarium? I only have one Mono peacock bass that I rescued so I don't have tons of experience, but I can tell you that mines will eat anything it can fit in its mouth, beat on anything smaller than him, eat more than anything else that I have, and grows faster. Mines has grown about 12" in one year and nearly killed my 14" black ghost knife fish.

Nice fish! The tank is only a 10 gallon as a grow out, same as my LFS. There is only one PBass in my tank though, compared to 3 PBass that were at the LFS. Maybe the lack of competition for food is causing it to grow faster? I also keep my tank at 78-80 degrees which may also help the growth.

Errr, you mean you can use a 10 gallon as a temporary growout? Would a 37 gallon work as a temporary growout for pbass juvies?

If I had more fish, I would start it in a larger tank, but the PBass is one of three small fish in the tank. The tank is VERY much temporary as the PBass will probably be ready to be moved in a week or so. I just want to make sure it is at a good size and healthy enough to compete for food to be moved so my fish in my larger grow out can't boss it around at all.

Plus, the 10 gallon makes it much easier to keep at very specific conditions that the young peacock bass seem to need. From my experience, at a young age their tank must be absolutely perfect for their needs, but as soon as they reach 6" or so, they do not require quite as much advanced care.

Your right, the higher temp probably was the defining factor in regards to growth. How big a aquarium will he be moving into after grow out. It won't take long for him to reach 6"?

I plan on moving him up to a 55 with some other SA cichlids, and keep moving up from there until it gets up to a 180.
