Hi guys,

I've been feeding my 3-4" peacock bass bloodworms until I realized I was terribly allergic to them.

I tossed that, and am trying to get them on pellets. They haven't eaten in 11 to 13 days and their stomaches are really skinny now.

I tried feeding them pellets that my other fish eat fine.

Will my Peacock Bass eventually eat the pellets too? OR, will they starve themselves to death? Will there be any signs of them at there limit where I must feed them bloodworms again?

To note, they are very active still!

Your 3-4" cichla have been starved for 11-13 days?!?!? That's terrible for cichla that size. They are not going to be the same and will definitely be stunted. They are not going to eat pellets at the size without the proper training and will starve themselves to death.

I've never in all my years of keeping cichla ever see a cichla that is allergic to eating black worms. Go get them some feeder guppies asap!

If your baby only ate a certain food, would you starve the baby hoping the baby would eat the food you wanted him/her to eat? Feed your baby pbass what they can eat now until they put on some weight, and then train them onto pellets or whatever. I, as well as you and others, don't like to see our baby pbass eating bloodworm only, but we've got to make them eat or they'd die. I've been soaking hikari pellets into thawed blood worms to try to get them start munching on the pellets.

I know you said you're allergic to the blood worms, but try the freeze dried form. Or try pop the cubes into the tank and quickly stay away. You don't touch or inhale the frozen cubes...and still be allergic to it?

Good luck.

Before buying my baby pbass, I started out my feeder guppies breeding tank again for a sole purpose of feeding them to the pbass if they decided not to eat anything else. This was exactly what I did when I raised my jardini from 2.5". The jar was a better eater than these pbass of mine so I didn't use the guppies. My pbass are eating blood worms now so I don't have to use the guppies either. Just wanted to share my experience.

It's the owner, not the fish, that is allergic to the worms.

Thanks for the tip guys. I'll try using bloodworms again since that's all I have. My 2.5" Jardini went on pellets since about 1.5". The bass are quite picky. I'll try to use Tubifex worms sparingly. ANd yes, I am highly allergic to them. Again, I will use them sparingly though. Thanks for the tips.

Have you tried FD bloodworms? Several brands make them in jars. You can sprinkle some in the tank without even touching the bloodworms.

try freeze dried krill, and break them into pieces until they can take whole ones. Mosquito larvae, or feeder guppies if you have to. That is way too long at that size. You dont want to starve them until around the 6" mark before trying to convert them to pellets. Good luck !!!

If they only taking frozen bloodworms, use a cup. If its the kind that come in a container use a plastic spoon to get it in a cup. If its the one that comes in cubes try and just pop in in the cup. Once in the cup run some warm water to defrost it and just use the cup to pour it in the tank. Either way you dont have to touch the worms and your fish are get to eat.
