What I want to know is if these fish are so aggressive, then why are they so skitish? The peacock bass I have flips out when I pass my tank.

The only pbass I've ever heard of as being aggressive were the orinocs. I certainly know that my two monocs are only aggressive with fish that can fit in their mouths. Otherwise, they are pretty much pushovers.

how big is it? and what size tank/tankmates

Pbass are not aggressive....get that idea out of your head.

They will not harrass other fish. They will only try and eat fish that can fit in their mouth.

They can however be aggressive to their own kind.

How big is the pbass? They are very skittish at juvie size. Mine took a good 6 months to settle down completely.

My experience with pb is when their are young they hide and is skidish but when their about five inches and up they come to you wanting food.

they are like that for a while.... they become real beast at about 6-10 inches and then from there on ... WOOOOOO MOMMMAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!as my girl says about mine and when she gets a shower from them at feeding time! :) and yess my orinos are the only ones that are aggressive towards all fish not just pbass

My temensis was VERY agressive with other fishes, especially othar cichlids. A friend of mine has a large tem that keep mouthlocking his oscar... Actually, it headlocks the oscar in its huge mouth. :D
BTW, my other cichlids and my friends oscar were too big for the tems to eat. ;)

Best regards.

Daniel.

My pbass are aggresive... they let everyone know who is boss in their tank, and are always first to eat and get their fill.

normal behavior....baby peas are just doing what they do naturally...In the wild they stick close to the shoreline in grassy thickets and cover to avoid being eaten by other fish or birds...they are very shy and very skittish to any larger moving object nearby.
Like it was stated..6-7" they become alot braver both due to size, natural time to venture into larger bodies of water, and they are used to you and the routine by this period...this is also the start of aggressive feeding.
At 14" + look out...feeding becomes not only a flood hazzard but a finger hazzard...I have had my big guys grab me while opening the tops of the tank, and although they have small teeth they can easily break your fingers....trust me on this one!! :grinyes:

As for aggression...pbass keep it to themselves, fighting most often to establish dominance in the group and singling out a whipping boy to take all the **** once everyone has their place....they will rarely squabble with other fish unless they plan on trying to eat them.....if your bass is messing with somebody-he is just sizing him up for a meal attempt at a later time :grinyes: The only exception to the rule as boost has stated is ORINOCENSIS....they are *****es, and will fight anybody...sometimes even if food is present they will go after other cichla and other fish in the tank....they enjoy it emensely
