Thanks to all who have posted in the past on how to wean a Pbass off of live food. Mine is happily eating peices of fish now and waiting for them almost as eagerly as he did for live feeders.

I am glad that now I wont have to spend a fortune feeding him as he gets bigger! I just catch pike in the creek that flows right past my house (a nasty chore but someone has to do it), fillet them, cut them into bite sized chunks and freeze them to kill any parasites before feeding.

Works great!

glad to see you are moving along. Nothing is greater in life than overcoming adversity.

FIsh are the number one reason for human parasites.

Well I trained him for about a week to hit the feeders on the surface. I fed the other fish first to get everyone in a frenzy at the surface and then waited until he was following my hand around before I dropped in the feeder. After about the third day he was smashing feeders without looking them over but I gave him a few more days to get well into the habit. Then I killed every second feeder for a couple days. After he took the first peice of fish I gave him a dead feeder every other feeding for 2 days (at which point I ran out of feeders) then went straight to the peices of fish. It has been 6 days now since he has had live food and now he is sulking a little. He doesnt smash them on the surface anymore but lets them sink to the bottom and sits there looking at them until another fish shows interest then he eats gobbles them up (the peices of fish not the other fish!).

So I guess it was about 12 days but I'm sure that I could have done it in 7 if I had pushed it.

Ive heard that it takes out one of the vitamins or something in the fish that other fish need, but Im not sure. You could go to an asian market, they sell all kinds of fish, and some other things like squid, shrimp, small crabs, and other things many people dont associate w/ "human" food (one by me sold peacock eels, frozen lol) that your fish might enjoy! Good work on getting the fish off live food though!

I didnt have much choice actualy. Both local LFS's had ich! (not for the first time either) So all I had for feeders was the ones I kept on hand, or drive 1.5 hrs to the city to pick some up and unless you time it right they are all out too!
