I have pea gravel in a couple of my tanks. It is granite pea gravel from a nursery, $5 a 50pd bag. Granite is basically inert in water. The size range is from about 1/8" to 1/4". The only negative is that it is a bit harder to clean with the Python as it is larger gravel than the fish store bougth stuff. The Python is just more difficult to push down through it.
I have it in my 150 because I thought it would prevent my fish from digging. Didn't help much, they still dig, and it is a little harder to clean with a python. But in the bigger tank, I think it has a pleasing effect, so I keep it.
its larger? i was just at home depot and the stuff they had was smaller than anything gravel at a pet shop i have seen. maybe there are just diiferent kinds
I use 2 sizes of mexican pea gravel that i get from "Whitewater Rock" in palm springs calif. This is the best stuff. It is soft sided like river rock. It has several shades of grey and brown and reds and they are all flecked with white. The two sizes are 3/8 and 3/4. I use 3/4 in the 5 and 6 foot tanks and 3/8 in smaller tanks. As stated earlier it is more difficult to gravel vac, BUT... I have found that using a power head to sweep with before i do a water change has a good result. I just stir up all the settled poo with the jet and make it float again. The Home Depot stuff is very different. Go to a land scaping place.
