pea puffer in community tank?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've done it in the past...

I would advise peaceful / quick fish, and definitely avoid any fish with long or very flowy fins, as they will get nipped...

I don't know why mfk is not notifying me when I get a reply to my posts... I was think of having a group with tetras, oto cats, and hillsteam loaches. Does that sound OK? I have heard getting them as young as possibly and letting them grow out with the community fish works out better

Otos i've tried and had no problems with, tetras at times get nipped fins but nothing major...

cant say about the hillstream loaches, but if the otos in the past have done fine, i guess they should too?

In a 35g tank with about a 15-20 tetras, 5 oto cats, and I hillsteam loach how many puffers do you think I could add without stressing them out? I should add there is a 30g on the bottom with 2 corner filter that is tied in to the 35
I added a picture so you can see the setup I am trying to accomplish this with
The top tank will be completely planted by the end of the week

I would aim for a number that disperses aggression while keeping the other fish from having too many aggressors. With this in mind I would aim for ~5. But I confess I know little of pea puffers and a higher number may be perfectly acceptable.

If you go with 5 puffers, just make sure to get maximum 1 or 2 males and the remaining females... This will help disperse aggression and should keep everyone happy...
