I want to set up a 35 gallon with dwarf frogs and upside down catfish. since these both come from africa I thought it might be a cool idea to stock it with all african fish! Of course I will want to avoid most cichlids and anything aggressive because both of the animals I want are easy targets for aggression. I don't want to overstock, I want everyone to have a lot of room!

dwarf cichlids..they come from lake tanganyika..

yeah some shellies might work. you could also add some killie fish from africa for some color. Not very monster, but it adds depth given the setup

Leopard ctenopoma would work, ropefish would probably eat the dwarf frogs

absolutely not on the ctenopoma, they're a predatory fish and would eat those frogs by the time they hit 3" - you'd have a better chance with the rope, as long as the frogs were full grown i don't think it'd be able to swallow em down and they don't try eating things that don't fit in their mouth

I don't think anything you suggested is peaceful enough! From the research I've done butterfly fish are predatory, and congo tetras and cichlids can be fin nippers. I don't want my dwarf frog to have any trouble. I think I will set it up as a 20 gallon instead and do 3 upside-down catfish and a couple dwarf frogs and maybe some african killifish.
