Hey guys, I need some suggestions. Any colorful, non-aggressive, big cichlids for my 75 gallon that can possibly live with my lapradei and ornate (laps the biggest at 11") you could suggest? Tank is pretty boring with just the two inside. Looking for something that wont pick on my polys and also wont get eaten. I think I've already made a similar post but that one went too off topic. Open to any suggestions. These are some of my ideas:

1. 1 Geophagus altifron and 1 Super red severum.
2. 1 Geophagus altifron and a group of 4? Angel fish
3. 1 Super red sev and a group of angels
4. Just 6 angels

Dont know much about CA Cichlids (species wise) but I've kept flowerhorns for years as well as african cichlids. I chose these fish because I think theyre the most eye catching fish whenever I go to fish stores. What do you guys think? Not restricted to CA/SA Cichlids tho. Just looking for something pretty cause people who see the tank dont appreciate my polys.

Another idea would be to go for some kind of big silvery fish that keep swimming like maybe (if possible) silver dollars or maybe tinfoil barbs? I know theyre not cichlids. Open to any fish suggestions (fish should be able to live there for life tho). And no the lap and ornate wont be in there for life. Will be moving them once they get to the 15ish size range.

I would think a single severum would not bother the polys.start with a small size of anything you choose so they maybe grow to accept those tankmates.or 3 SD could be nice, or some melon, filament or odessa barbs.

I think any of your suggestions would work, though the angels might be problematic in the long run if the ornate gets massive (which would need a bigger tank than a 75g anyway). I'd look at adding a group of altifrons, or severums, I don't think either species would cause problems with the bichirs.

ps. there is no such thing as an altifron, it is still altifrons even if you only have one of them! ;)

Thanks guys. The 75 is good for about two years for the polys (I think). The ornate isnt even in the tank yet cause he's just around 5" now so right now the laps got the tank for himself. A group of sevs? How many are you thinking? I think two are the most I can put in the tank right? Any other suggestions? Some top dwelling attractive big fish? Dont know why but I'm kinda attracted to deep bodied fish lol. And thanks for the heads up about the altifrons! That was bad for a future biologist

Tinfoils need more room. I have 11 of them around 8" in a 5x3 footprint and they use every inch of the tank. They obviously don't require as much space as I have, but a 75 would be too small in the long run, plus they need to be in groups, I had 2 to begin with and they would constantly fight, and my giant gourami would go mad chasing them all day, now there are so many the GG just ignores them.

Geo's are good, silver dollars are good, you could look into Festivum, they are a nice combination of angel and SA cichlid and not that common so kinda cool. You could also try a datnoid. they grow SUPER SLOW. and would take a long time to outgrow your 75. I grew one out with my bichirs and they got on great.

edit * I had no clue this was an old thread, my bad.

Appreciate the suggestions man. And no this aint really old lol still interested in other people's suggestions! Dont think I'd be getting the SDs anymore. Family thinks they look like the dried fish youd see in chinese stores (IMO they look great tho). Would be researching on the festivums, thanks. A dat would be cool too, would def consider them. How many can I keep and how long will it take them to outgrow the tank if I get them at 3-4"?

Right now I'm on the side of leopard ctenopomas, they look pretty cool and theyre from africa so I can keep the african I like theme in the tank. Right now from my most wanted to the least:

Leopard ctenopoma
Datnoid
Super red/gold sev
Festivum
Altifrons
Angelfish

I'd pass on altifrons. They are best in groups and are way too big for a 75 to be kept in groups.

I've had my Silver Dollar's coexist with my Poly's going on 4 years, never had issues.:)

Alright. I also cant keep a planted tank with the altifrons cause they dig up the substrate I use and turn the whole tank brown. Learned that the hard way. Too bad I've two small ones right now and no one's willing to adopt them.
