ive read this a few times now on here, im pretty new to cichlids (not new to aquariums though) and just wonder what people mean exactly when they say one of there cichlids plays the "peacekeeper" role. what does that mean exactly, do they break up fights among tankmates or what? seems odd to me that a cichlid would play the role of police officer, but anyway, please let me know what everyone means exactly, id kinda like to have a "peacekeeper"

i'm not to sure how it happens but i've always managed to have a peace keeper. it's usually the dominate fish breaking up fights between less dominate fish.

I have one right now in my tank. My synspilum is the largest fish in the tank, and whenever there are squabbles among the smaller fish, he will usually swim between them and break them up. I'm not sure if you could actually add a fish to the tank for specifically that role. I think it is more of a dominance thing that happens naturally.

my GT used to break up attacks from my severum attacking other fish. my GT was also the dominant fish in the tank.

My Jag plays this role perfectly. Doesn't chase or attack others but will always investigate or intervene when there is some action. He is to big to mess with and it keeps others focused on him instead of each other.
