Hello, first off Sorry for the long post but I need to tell the story first. I am having a bit of a worry as I got half my fish back from the fish shop today to go in my new 220g 7x2x2 tank with 2 FX6's fitted. I just moved house and have upgraded to the big tank while the fish were holidaying at the lfs. Everything was fine until I see my 5 inch jaguar cichlid has a hole in its belly where my fahaka has taken a chunk out of him! Now, they have been together for 5 months with no issues and the jag is fine...swimming and feeding normally. So I am putting this down to a enquiry nip (probably from being in a lfs sump tank with little decor) rather than an direct effort to kill him. The fahaka is not overly aggressive and just nips fish that don't swim away to see if they are food or not.

The fish stocking plan was the jag, a large birchir, talking cat fish, the fahaka and then either a jardini Arowana or 2 kelberi peacock bass.

The fahaka will go in last to reduce aggression but I am worried if I spend £150 on 2 peacock bass they will just be an expensive meal.. I had no worries until today when I saw my jag. But I can get a small jardini for £55 from the lfs. Basically which do I get?!

The peacocks are far more colourful and the misses loves them (the tank is in the front room so that counts!) but they are small and less agressive and swim in the middle section of the tank= they will meet the fahaka.

However the jardini gets much bigger and is more aggressive and swims at the surface so not occupying the same area of the tank as the fahaka. And it's a third of the price.

What do I get? Below is the tank at the moment.

A jardini will definitely give the fahaka more of a test than bass , eventually once grown it'll try and dominate it and takeover the tank

would a jardini force the issue to a case of fahaka or jardini has to be removed to prevent one killing the other? Or is there any chance they can coexist?

From my experience you'll be very lucky if they live together long term without constant stress and fighting jardini are next level aggression when they want to be

Cool I know you have a lot of experience with jardini so it's good advice. Think that answers my question really! that and the misses really likes the kelberi so problem Solved. Thanks dude.

No worries hope you have decent luck with some bass , I think safety in numbers would work best with bass and the fahaka

I don't have a fahaka, but I've got a jar, a pbass and a pike in my 240 (plus others but these are the aggressors). My Pbass is the largest - pushing 22" and does whatever it wants - goes wherever, pushes everyone else out of the way and nobody picks on him. The Jar and the Pike are 14 - 16". The pike is definitely the most aggressive. The Jar likes to chase the barbs, Geos and Tilapia around (6 to 10").

The fahaka will bite anything in half that isn't larger than it. And that isn't a given. He will bite chunks out of everyone.
