I have a few questions about feeding my new Peacock Bass for anyone who can help. I just recently set up a second tank for his feeders because I didn't realize that a 3-4 in. fish could or would eat 50 rosies in less than 2 days. (these things are pigs, which is cool with me.) The feeder tank is now cycled and operational and the bass is about 5 inches and has stepped up to small goldfish. I have got him eating on a better routine now, hes hammering about 7-10 goldfish a day, but as usual I'm hearing that goldfish may not be the best option. Could an expert tell me if this is as much of a concern as it's been made out to be. I prefer the goldfish, seeing as they are bigger and more hardy to keep, but I'd like to do my best to see that this fish doesn't die. I will attempt to train him to take dry food later but he seems to be really into eating live right now. Basically if anyone whos kept these fish can give me a brief idea of how to properly feed them i would appreciate it. Also if the picture I put along with this is visible, could some one give me an exact id of the fish. I am ready to go to school.

Thanks. I'm having trouble telling much of a difference between a lot of them. Mines got 3 bars, I know thats important. Maybe a mono? Oriono? I'm not confident.

looks like an orinoco to me because of the lack of gold and the near full stripe between the tail and body but i could be wrong

Thanks for the help with the ID. Anyone know if the goldfish are in any way harmful to the fish. He still doesn't seem to care at all. Hitting them hard as ever.

I would use minnows in place of gold fish. Until the Cichla pass the 15'' point gold fish are not a good choice. Minnow's are smaller but will still surfice. I would also suggest offering other types food's. Pellet's/Krill/Shrimp/Bloodworms/Talapia/Silverside's. If you feed a constant mix of item's then you should have not health issue's long term.

The problem with Gold fish is Thyamine and also the 99% fat content. Minnows provide a broader spectrum of nutrition espaecially if gut loaded and properly quarintened(sp). Most would suggest holding the feeder's for 24hrs to 1 week. Sorry about the spelling error's. I hope this help's and answers your question.

Thanks buddy. That Thyamine stuff is what I was hearing about. I heard it stunts growth. I appreciate you taking the time to help. I have been offering him up a good mix of protein with bloodworms, krill, mysis shrimp and cichlid pellets. So far he's taken a few bites but the best progress i've got was when he used to eat all the dead rosies I pulled from the feeder tank. Thanks again for the info.
