I’ve had my PB for over a year now and despite being a little bit of a bully, he’s a great fish. I do have a couple of questions I’m hoping the experts can help me with:

1) Can you ID which sub-species my PB is?

2) Why is he so dark? I see everyone post pics of these wonderfully colorful PB’s and despite pellet feeding, etc he seems to be darker than most.4DB3EB39-983D-4CBC-87EB-3D3CCEDA236A.jpeg

Right now a 90. Have been growing him, a silver aro, and clown knife for the past year. In the process of locating a 265-300 to set up this year for them.
Look faster!! The Kel is gonna grow fast.....dark color could be a result of crowding.....full tank shot? What is in the tank? backround looks dark......

Funny, I actually put a deposit down on a 265 today, so we’ll be good in a month or two once I have it and cycled.

Here are some pics of the current tank and inhabitants (silver aro, clown knife, and pb). There is a decent piece of driftwood tans the background is just one of the cheap plastic printed ones.

to answer your question: hes a stressed kelberi. As for why hes stressed, you have much too small of a tank for any fish in it. The clown knife might be okay for another month or two but realistically that kelberi needs at minimum a tank twice that big, and long term that arow and clown knife need a 8 ft by 4 ft wide tank but your upgrade is a great start. Theyre stressed because theyre cramped and arent happy. Bass are amazing fish, especially because they can really show their emotions through color beyond what I feel most other fish do. To the point I try to photograph my fish after a water change followed by a large feeding because their colors go beyond wonderful [as in my profile photo]. While your kel is just probably beginning to enter its coloring up phase [kels tend to color up later than many other bass, but its usually felt prolonged as well because they dont grow as fast either], what you feed him and the room you give him will help him develop leaps and bounds. It might also help to get him 2 or 3 other kels to school with after you have your upgrade tank. You definitely love your monster fish! Look forward to seeing your progress with them.

By the way, your kel looks a little thin, what do you feed? If you like I can give you some good suggestions that work well for me
