I am not familiar with peacocks at all. What color are all peacocks at small sizes? Do they all start out gray and only the males wll turn colorful? Or are they all colorful and females will later turn gray?

I have seen very few show at 1 inch. That is a little small. Some will start to some color 3 inches perhaps 2... others are late bloomers. Some will show no color while other males around.

sounds pretty much like a dominance thing like mbuna...will most LFS sell both males and females or only males? and would prices be differential?

Both evojoey and MD are correct. Some will show a bit of color at 1 inch and some will never show till 3+ inches. I've had some males that didn't show color until they were separated in their on tanks.

The SECRET to coloring up fish is to get a good line and when the fry start to show bit of color than separate them in their own tanks with a few fish that they can dominate. This will always work with good feed and weekly water changes. Here are a some pictures of the fish that I have breed:

Gotta watch out for "juicing" or acid dye baths with Peacocks @ 1-3" sold by large pet chains. Usually they start out grey then either show multi coloration to the body, head or fins or turn a dark purplish for female Jacob's.

Check local cichlid clubs. Breeders there will most likely have several varities and ones already coloring up.

I hear stories all the time about juiced fish and it's just passed on to others with no proof just their individual thoughts. So i think it's pretty much gossip. No offense to you Otherone, it's not directed towards you.

No offense takin' - this is an eductional forum - Heres's one testimonal to the Dying process - http://crosssroadsofnowhere.blogspot.com/2007/09/blueberry-oscar.html

I've actually bought a blueberry oscar, He was Blue. saw the fish lastnite at a friends - the Fish is albino w/ faint orange and almost gone blue hues on the fins.
I posted this experience in the CA/SA forum. As for africans - The Ruby Red Peacock
from Petsmart - I bought a few of these @ 1" brillantly colored red/blue - the red lasted maybe a month or 2 then they went grey - 1 died - 2 grew up female. Juicing is a reality not a myth.

I agree. The hormone treating of fish is well known with gouramis. I've saw some very young S. fryeri at the lfs. All of them were bright blue and way too young to be showing that kind of color.
